Dec. 11 - Our final meeting is next Tuesday, December 18. Your term paper is due along with your final exam.

Dec. 4 - Read Chapter 13 for next week. Also read the dilemma on Political Advertising outlined on pp.247-248. For the sake of discussion, assume the scenario is about New Hampshire in the fall of 2012 and consider the economic implications. Analyze the various opinions of your staff then come to a conclusion as general manager on what your station's policy will be. Your term paper (profile of the Manchester radio market) is due two weeks from tonight, Dec. 18!

Nov. 27 - In addition to reading Chapters 11 & 12, read The Tough Retailer scenario on pp.203-204, then create a written media plan for Robinson's Appliances calculating the GIs, GRPs, CPM and CPP using the numbers provided. Refer to pp.196-7 for the formulas you'll need.

Nov. 20 - Read Chapters 9-10 for next week and complete your Midterm Exams. Here's your written assignment. You are the program director for WHES Radio; you've worked there for 8 years and formerly hosted the morning show. When you were promoted to your current position five years ago, one of your responsibilities was to hire your on-air replacement. You chose Bill Smith who has proved to be a successful and popular air personality. Arbitron is about to begin the semi-annual ratings survey for your market when Bill tells you he needs a leave of absence to take care of his wife, who is going to have major surgery. Bill could be out for several weeks; the exact time is unclear. Bill has a partner, Beth-Anne Reynolds, who reads the news and functions as Bill's sidekick, but you have concerns whether she is capable of replacing him for an extended period. If she does, who will perform Beth-Anne's job? Outline the managerial issues presented by this situation (think Chapter 6), including legal or company guidelines. Discuss all of your options.

Nov. 13 - Read Chapters 7-8 for next week. Your written assignment is to research an incident involving Doug Lambert and radio station WEMJ in Laconia. Something happened in November 2009 and I'd like you to summarize the situation, then analyze it from three ethical perspectives: Lambert's, the management of WEMJ, and management of the Laconia Daily Sun newspaper. Also, be working on your term paper. Next Tuesday you will be given a take home Midterm Exam; it is due the Tuesday after Thanksgiving.

Nov. 6 - Read Chapters 5-6 for next week. Another link that will be helpful for your term papers is the NHAB website. Now, here's the case study scenario for your written assignment...your music radio station records listener telephone calls for playback on the air. Today you're driving to a sales call when you hear, behind a record, the deejay talking to a female caller. He is clearly chatting her up with the intent of getting a date. They don't say anything overtly improper but the intent is clear. The woman hangs up and another caller is heard - still while the music is playing - asking the deejay if he knows his previous conversation was on the air. When you get back to the station, what are your options?

Nov. 1 - Please read Chapters 1-4. Write a paper based on this scenario. You are the station manager and you are rarely at the station on Saturday evening when the "All Request" show airs. You realize you left something at the office that you need, so you go in at 9:00 p.m. and see the Request show host with his feet propped up on the console, a beer in one hand and a joint in the other. While a record plays he looks at you and says, "can I help you dude?" Outline all of your management options in handling this situation.

Oct. 30 - cancelled by Hurricane Sandy - mandatory makeup class on Thursday, Nov. 1, 8:10-10:50 p.m.

Class Project: Your Manchester Radio Market Profile is due December 18th; you will submit an in-depth, written profile of each of the radio stations in the market. Address topics like ownership, management, target demographics, formats, programming techniques, power output, studio facilities and ratings. The paper is to be typed. A good place to start your research is at this FCC link.
