married Henrietta Geraldine McKay

Henrietta Geraldine McKay was christened on February 25, 1867 at Saint Peter's Church, Liverpool, Lancashire, England, the daughter of Robert Cornelius McKay and Margaret Armstrong. On August 15, 1868 a ship called "Melita" arrived in Boston from the Port of Liverpool, England. The passengers included 26-year-old Margaret McKay, 12-year-old Janet McKay, 6-year-old Eliza McKay, 4-year-old Henrietta McKay and 2-year-old Neal McKay. The family settled in Gloucester.

Henrietta was no stranger to death at an early age. Her father died in 1876 when she was only 11; her mother died in 1880 when she was 15. Her stepfather died in 1888 when Henrietta was 23.

On July 17, 1890 Henrietta witnessed the marriage of her sister, Rebecca Armstrong McKay, to Lewis Frank Tewkesbury at St. James Rectory in Amesbury, MA. By 1891 Etta McKay lived on Powwow Street in Amesbury and was employed as a bookkeeper at G.W. Osgood's.

Henrietta and John James Brouder had their first child a year before they married; the relationship was stormy--involving several moves between Massachusetts and Connecticut. Henrietta married John in Haverhill, Massachusetts on May 20, 1891 and they had several more children:

Lyman Richard McKay b. 2/5/1890 Malden, MA / m. Ida Jennie Grover 6/14/1919 Winthrop, MA / d. 2/15/1960 Winthrop, MA
John Gerald McKay b. 3/19/1892 West Haven, CT, m. Evelina Alberta Edwardsen 10/20/1926 Brewster, NY / d. 3/25/1977 Winthrop, MA

Frank Neil Brouder b. 1/29/1896 New Haven, CT / d. 6/30/1896 Amesbury, MA
Rebecca Isabel Brouder b. 1/24/1897 Amesbury, MA / d. 7/14/1897 New Haven, CT

Ruth Lorrain Brouder b.@5/5/1903 - place unknown / m. Arthur McKinley Marshall 12/15/1925 Brewster, NY / d. 4/27/1980 Lynn, MA

By the late 1890s several of Henrietta's siblings also lived in New Haven: Rebecca Armstrong (McKay) & Lewis Tewkesbury...Robert N. & Effie M. (Langmaid) McKay...sister Isabella M. McKay and brother John I. McKay.

Henrietta and John eventually split, with Lyman, John, Harry and Ruth moving with her to Boston and taking the McKay name. Six-year-old Robert Brouder stayed in New Haven with Henrietta's brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Effie. By 1900 Henrietta lived in Boston with her cousin Neil Wellington McKay (b. 7/1/1869 Prince Edward Island, Canada). They were together for the rest of their lives. They spent many years in Winthrop before moving to Gloucester in the late 1920s.

Neil Wellington MacKay died on January 26, 1941 of "pneumonia bronchial" and "chronic bronchitis." Two months later Henrietta died on March 25, 1941 at the age of 74. The cause of death was "tuberculosis pulmonary." Both were buried at Clark's Cemetery in Gloucester.

The name on her death record at the Gloucester City Clerk's Office is Henrietta Geraldine Brouder, which leads one to believe she never legally divorced John James Brouder. He lived until January 13, 1960.
